Catholic Saints Stories | Hidden Halos
In a glass case in a small French church lies a human skull with a hole above the brow. Tradition says an archangel put it there — and that the man who carried that wound went on to build one of the most visited monuments in France.
This is the story of Bishop Aubert of Avranches, an eighth-century bishop who ignored a vision from the Archangel Michael not once, but twice — until pain left him no choice but to obey. What Aubert eventually built became Mont Saint-Michel, a fortress that would stand unconquered through the Hundred Years' War, and whose founding angel is said to have appeared again seven centuries later — to a young peasant girl named Joan of Arc.
