Welcome back to Emberhollow - a small village out of time, and a place to rest.
It is the twenty-sixth night of the year, and the snow is coming down in big slow flakes with no wind at all. Tonight we go down to the bottom of Miller's Lane, to the bakery under the last lantern, where the whole lower lane smells of oranges - because once a year, at the end of January, a crate of bitter oranges comes up the valley on the carrier's cart, and Maren cuts them by hand, all evening, for the village's marmalade.
The oranges are rough and sour and nobody eats one twice. The pips go into a square of cloth from the dairy, because the pips are where the set is kept. The peel is cut into strips the width of a matchstick, the way her mother cut it, while Barnaby lies on the warm flagstone with his back pointedly turned to the whole business. Corwen brings the last empty jar home through the snow. And three white saucers are pressed into the snow on the windowsill beside the loaf, to be ice cold for tomorrow's test.
Then the bowl of cut peel goes to the cold end of the dark kitchen, with the bag of pips pushed down among it, to soak all night and do the part that nobody's hands can do - and the night passes over it an hour at a time, the train, the church clock, the snow stopping, the stars, and someone taking the loaf at four and leaving the saucers exactly where they are.
Nothing bad happens in Emberhollow. Nothing startling, nothing sudden, no cliffhanger. It is safe to fall asleep at any point; you lose nothing, and the village will still be here tomorrow, exactly where you left it.
