Welcome back to Emberhollow - a small village out of time, and a place to rest.
It is the twenty-eighth night of the year, a hard clear frost under a big moon, and not a breath of wind. Tonight we go up through the walled garden to the old orchard on its long white slope, and down to the small cottage in the corner of the walls at the bottom of it - because tonight, a little before seven, the whole of Emberhollow came up the hill with lanterns to wish the orchard a good year.
Loveday toasted Maren's bread at her stove and drew a jug of last year's cider; Elsie sent up the inn's great wooden bowl, full of hot spiced ale with roasted apples floating in it. Under the oldest tree in the orchard the cider went down onto its roots, the youngest children were lifted up to put toast in its branches for the robin, and the whole village sang the old song once, softly, the way you sing in a room where somebody is asleep - because the trees are.
Then the lanterns went home down the hill, and Loveday went back up alone with her pruning knife, to cut nine pencil-thick shoots from the old tree by moonlight. An apple never grows true from its pip, so the way to keep a tree is to carry a piece of it onto new roots - and the nine sticks go into a box of damp sand in the cold barn, to sleep until April.
Nothing bad happens in Emberhollow. Nothing startling, nothing sudden, no cliffhanger. It is safe to fall asleep at any point; you lose nothing, and the village will still be here tomorrow, exactly where you left it.
