Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (IATA: OPO, ICAO: LPPR) is the main international airport serving Porto and the wider northern region of Portugal. It is located approximately 11 kilometres northwest of Porto city centre and is situated across the municipalities of Maia, Matosinhos, and Vila do Conde. The airport operates as a single-terminal facility and is one of the busiest aviation hubs in Portugal. Basic structure and layout Porto Airport has one integrated passenger terminal building. The terminal handles all arrivals, departures, Schengen, and non-Schengen flights within a single structure. The building is organised across multiple levels. The ground level is used primarily for arrivals and baggage reclaim, while upper levels contain check-in desks, departure areas, security screening zones, retail areas, and boarding gates. The airport has approximately 60 check-in desks, multiple security lanes, and around 20+ boarding gates depending on configuration. Aircraft parking positions are connected via a mix of air bridges and remote stands served by bus transfers. The airport operates a single runway, designated 17/35, which is approximately 3,480 metres in length and surfaced in asphalt. This runway length allows operation of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, supporting both short-haul European services and selected longer-range routes. History and development The airport opened in 1945 and was originally known as Pedras Rubras Airport, named after the local area where it was built. The surrounding land was historically agricultural before aviation development began. In 1990, the airport was renamed in honour of Francisco Sá Carneiro, a Portuguese prime minister who died in a plane crash in 1980 while travelling on a domestic route involving Porto. During the early 2000s, the airport underwent major redevelopment. A new terminal was constructed and became operational in 2006. This redevelopment replaced older facilities and significantly increased passenger handling capacity. Since then, the airport has continued to expand incrementally through apron extensions, gate additions, and airfield improvements. Passenger traffic and operations Porto Airport is the second-busiest airport in Portugal after Lisbon Airport. In recent years, it has handled around 15–17 million passengers annually, with continued growth driven by tourism, low-cost carriers, and point-to-point European routes. It is also one of the most important airports in northern Iberia for short- and medium-haul traffic. Aircraft movements typically exceed 100,000 per year. Daily operations vary but frequently exceed 200 flights per day during peak periods. The airport serves a mix of full-service, low-cost, and charter airlines. Major airlines operating from Porto include TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair, easyJet, and several European network carriers. The airport functions as a base or focus city for multiple low-cost operators, contributing to a high frequency of intra-European connections. The average flight distance from Porto is around 1,300–1,400 kilometres, reflecting a strong emphasis on short and medium-haul connectivity. Airfield characteristics The airport has one runway (17/35) with a length of approximately 3,480 metres, allowing operations by aircraft such as Airbus A320 family, Boeing 737 series, Airbus A330, and similar types. The airport elevation is around 69 metres above sea level. Taxiway infrastructure connects the runway to apron areas on both sides of the terminal. Ground handling operations support passenger services, cargo flights, and general aviation movements.
