For travellers exploring northern Portugal by rail, Campanhã Railway Station is one of the most important transport hubs in the country. Located in the eastern part of Porto, the station serves as the city's main long-distance and regional railway gateway, connecting Porto with destinations across Portugal and beyond. While São Bento Station is often better known for its historic architecture and decorative tilework, Campanhã handles the majority of Porto’s rail traffic and is the principal station for intercity and high-speed services. Campanhã Station opened in 1875 as part of the expansion of Portugal’s national railway network during the nineteenth century. Its development was closely linked to the growth of rail transport between Porto, Lisbon and northern Portugal. The station takes its name from the Campanhã district, which historically developed as an industrial and transport area on the eastern side of the city. Today, the station is operated by Infraestruturas de Portugal and serves as a major interchange between long-distance, regional and urban rail services. It is one of the busiest railway stations in Portugal outside Lisbon and plays a key role in linking Porto with the rest of the country. The station is served by Alfa Pendular services, Portugal’s premier high-speed rail network. These trains connect Porto with major cities including Coimbra, Aveiro, Lisbon, Faro and Braga. Alfa Pendular trains operate at speeds of up to 220 km/h on parts of the network and are the fastest rail services in Portugal. Intercidades services also operate from Campanhã, providing conventional long-distance connections between major Portuguese cities. Regional and suburban services form another important part of the station's operation. Porto's urban rail network connects Campanhã with surrounding towns and cities throughout northern Portugal. Regular trains operate to destinations such as Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro, Penafiel and Marco de Canaveses. These services are used extensively by commuters travelling into Porto for work and education. The station consists of multiple platforms serving both through and terminating trains. The layout is designed to accommodate a high volume of passenger traffic and includes extensive track infrastructure connecting the station with routes heading north, south and east. The railway lines surrounding Campanhã include some of Portugal's busiest rail corridors. One of the station's key advantages for visitors is its connection to Porto's public transport network. Campanhã is directly linked to the Metro do Porto system, allowing passengers to transfer easily between rail and light rail services. Metro lines provide connections to central Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia and Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. Several city and regional bus routes also serve the station. Architecturally, Campanhã Station reflects its nineteenth-century origins, although it has undergone numerous upgrades and modernisations over the years. The station building features traditional railway architecture combined with more modern passenger facilities. Recent redevelopment projects have focused on improving accessibility, passenger circulation and integration with other transport modes. The station is located approximately three kilometres east of Porto's historic centre. Journey times between Campanhã and São Bento Station are only a few minutes by train, and many long-distance passengers continue into the city centre using local rail services or the metro network. For rail enthusiasts, Campanhã is one of the best locations in Porto to observe Portuguese railway operations.
