The traveler had been on the road long before the hills of Awenreach came into view.
Rain had followed the journey through the night, but by sunrise the clouds had broken apart above Larkstone Rise. Water still shone in the ruts of the old high road, and the heather on either side held bright drops along every stem. The traveler climbed steadily, deep green cloak darkened at the hem, staff pressing into the wet ground, a small leather satchel resting against one hip.
At the crest, skylarks rose suddenly from the grass.
Their calls carried into the open air, higher and farther than anything the traveler had heard on the lower roads. Beyond them, the Dunmoors unfolded in long green-brown slopes cut by pale stone walls and narrow streams swollen from the rain.
The road ahead was not easy to follow. Runoff had crossed it during the night, spreading loose gravel over the shallow wheel ruts. For a short distance, the track seemed to vanish into the hillside.
The traveler stopped and watched the water.
Each small stream ran downhill except one. There, water gathered briefly along a line of buried stones before spilling away. The traveler followed that line and found the road again where the old paving emerged from beneath turf.
A little farther on, the land opened.
Across a broad hollow, standing alone on a distant ridge, was a round stone tower.
It was too far away to show windows or doors. Morning light touched only one side of it, leaving the other cool and grey. No village surrounded it, and no smoke rose nearby.
The traveler stood for a while, not because the tower looked threatening, but because it gave the road a shape. Until that moment, Awenreach had been only a name heard from ferrymen, shepherds and people met far to the west.
Now there was a road beneath the traveler’s boots and a place on the horizon toward which it seemed to lead.
The skylarks settled again.
Wind moved across Larkstone Rise, carrying the clean smell of wet grass and stone. The traveler tightened the satchel strap, turned east, and continued along the recovered road.
The journey had begun elsewhere.
But this was the first morning it passed beneath the wide sky of Awenreach.
Three hours of Celtic fantasy music and atmospheric medieval ambience inspired by the windswept Dunmoors, ancient stone roads, distant round towers and the wide highland landscapes of Awenreach. Created for reading, writing, studying, relaxing and quiet work.
