feeding red wigglers, what do worms eat, worm chow, worm grit, red wiggler bedding, worm bedding recipe, biochar worm bin, worm castings, vermicomposting, pre-compost worm bin
Worms need two things from their bedding: nutrition and digestion support. On the nutrition side are worm chow, molasses, and yeast, with worm castings from an established bin to bring in the bacteria and fungi that get it all working.
On the digestion side are sand and charged biochar. Worms have no teeth. They grind their food in the gizzard with grit, so sand and biochar get swallowed and passed straight through without being digested.
The biochar does a second job. Once charged, it houses fungi and bacteria, and it ends up in the castings. The organic part of those castings feeds the garden for a season or two, while the biochar stays in the soil for centuries, the same way Amazonian terra preta has.
Pre-composted to 43°C before a single worm goes in. Zone 3 basement worm farm, built for spring.
