Back to the island after 12 years; last time we were here in November 2014, just 2 months after the murders of the two British tourists, Hannah Witheridge and David Miller.
The island is internationally recognised as Thailand’s leading destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. Its surrounding waters are home to colourful reef fish, coral formations and marine life, while several bays provide opportunities to explore underwater scenery close to shore. Popular locations include Sairee Beach, the island’s best-known stretch of sand, and Tanote Bay, where rocky headlands and a distinctive offshore granite boulder create a memorable setting.
Koh Tao has several viewpoints that reveal the island’s distinctive shape and spectacular coastline. John-Suwan Viewpoint is particularly famous for its panoramic view across two bays, while the nearby southern coast offers secluded coves and quieter beaches. A boat trip to neighbouring Koh Nang Yuan is another highlight, especially for its three small islands connected by a striking white sandbar surrounded by turquoise sea.
This time, I brought my drone, rented a scooter, and set off to explore the island at my own pace. With the freedom of two wheels, I followed winding coastal roads, wandered through quiet local villages, and discovered hidden corners that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Every turn offered the possibility of something new, from secluded beaches and lush tropical vegetation to spectacular viewpoints overlooking the surrounding sea.
The final edit includes a few photos from 2014.
