Recorded at the BSPRM 2026 Conference in Edinburgh, this interview features Associate Professor Xiaolei Hu, a rehabilitation physician from Sweden, in conversation with Dr Javvad Haider, newly elected BSPRM President-Elect, following her plenary presentation on evidence-based stroke rehabilitation.
Associate Professor Hu explains why rehabilitation delivered during the early phase of recovery can be particularly effective. She discusses how substantially greater training intensity may be needed when rehabilitation begins later and considers how emerging technologies could help extend opportunities for recovery while making intensive training more engaging for patients.
Drawing on her work as Chair of the ISPRM ClinFit Committee and Coordinator of the ESPRM Scientific Board, Associate Professor Hu highlights the importance of research, international scientific meetings and collaborative networks in generating and sharing stronger evidence for rehabilitation practice. She also reflects positively on the UK’s evidence-based stroke rehabilitation guidelines and looks ahead to further international collaboration.
