In this video, we solve a numerical problem on an axial flow turbine, step by step, and find the change in total enthalpy, power developed and the change in total temperature across the rotor. Problem: Air enters an axial flow turbine with a tangential component of absolute velocity of 600 m/s in the direction of rotation. At the rotor exit, the tangential component of absolute velocity is 100 m/s in a direction opposite to the rotational speed. The tangential blade speed is 250 m/s. Evaluate (i) the change in total enthalpy of air between the inlet and outlet of the rotor, (ii) the power in kW if the mass flow rate is 10 kg/s, and (iii) the change in total temperature across the rotor. Topics covered: Problem statement and given data Sign convention for whirl velocity components in opposite directions Application of Euler's turbine equation for axial flow turbine Calculation of change in total (stagnation) enthalpy Calculation of power developed from mass flow rate Relation between enthalpy change and total temperature change Calculation of change in total temperature across the rotor Final answers and key points to remember for exams This video is useful for VTU Mechanical Engineering, B.E./B.Tech students studying Turbomachines, Fluid Machinery and Hydraulic Turbines. #Turbomachines #AxialFlowTurbine #EulerTurbineEquation #Numericals #VTU #MechanicalEngineering
