Quiet lanes, traditional Cotswold stone houses, birdsong and the countryside stretching out around the village before the day really gets going. Elkstone is one of the highest villages in the Cotswolds, sitting around 1,000 feet above sea level in the Gloucestershire countryside. Its history stretches back more than 900 years. Elkstone was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, although the settlement itself is likely to be considerably older. One of the village's great historical treasures is the Church of St John the Evangelist. Dating principally from the 12th century, it is an exceptional example of Norman architecture and is believed to be the highest church in the Cotswolds. The church contains remarkable medieval stonework, including Norman arches and unusual carved heads and creatures. An unusual chamber above the chancel was also used as a dovecote at one point in its history.
