Derwent Valley Railway Tasmania 🚂 | Hidden Railway History of New Norfolk

Step inside one of Tasmania’s fascinating railway heritage sites — the Derwent Valley Railway at New Norfolk. After our beautiful Spirit of Hobart cruise along the River Derwent from Hobart to New Norfolk, we visited this historic railway precinct and discovered an extraordinary collection of locomotives, carriages and railway memorabilia. The Derwent Valley railway story stretches back to 1887, when the line reached New Norfolk and transformed transport through Tasmania’s Derwent Valley. Over the decades, the railway extended deeper into the valley, carrying passengers, agricultural produce, timber and industrial freight. Today, dedicated volunteers are preserving this remarkable part of Tasmania’s transport history. We were fortunate to meet Paul, who generously showed us around the railway yard and workshops and shared wonderful stories about the locomotives, carriages and the history of the line.
