Russia sits on one enormous open plain, with no mountains and no sea to hide behind. So for a thousand years, armies simply walked in: the Mongols, the Poles, Napoleon, Hitler. And every time, Russia came back bigger. This is more than 1,100 years of Russian history in 14 minutes: the Vikings on the river, the Mongol conquest, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Napoleon in Moscow, the freeing of the serfs, the 1917 revolution, Stalin, the Second World War, Sputnik, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Russia today.
How did a small wooden fort in a forest become the largest country on Earth? And why did ordinary Russians always seem to pay the price?

A note on sources: dates and figures come from standard reference histories. The founding stories of Rurik and Vladimir come from the Primary Chronicle and are told as legend. Death tolls for the civil war, the 1932 to 1933 famine and the Second World War are given as the ranges historians use; the figure of about 680,000 executions in 1937 and 1938 is from the Soviet archives. The early kingdom at Kyiv is the shared origin of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. On the war in Ukraine, the video gives the Russian government's stated reasons, the view of Ukraine and most governments, and the United Nations General Assembly vote of 2 March 2022. Maps are approximate and use Ukraine's internationally recognised borders.
