What are you becoming rich in?
In Luke 12, Jesus tells the story of a successful man whose land produced an abundant harvest.
His problem was not that he had much.
His problem was that all his richness stopped with himself.
He planned for bigger barns.
He planned for comfort.
He planned for the future.
But he did not plan for eternity.
This message explores Jesus’ warning that:
“Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
We also look at the connection between greed and anxiety.
Greed says:
“I need more.”
Anxiety says:
“What if I do not have enough?”
Both can make possessions the place where we look for security.
But Jesus points us toward something better:
The Father.
Our deepest security does not come from finally having enough.
It comes from knowing:
I have a Father.
And when Christ becomes our treasure, our possessions no longer have to become our saviour.
Jesus then challenges us:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Generosity does not only bless the receiver.
It disciples the giver.
It teaches our hearts:
Possessions are not my treasure. Fear is not my master. Jesus is worth more.
So the question is not merely:
How much have I accumulated?
It is:
What is my treasure teaching my heart to love?
May Jesus be our treasure.
And may He make us rich toward God.
