What does real leadership look like when life changes the plan, and when the people around you do not yet believe in themselves? In this episode of The Success Nuggets, David Abel speaks with Gina Gardiner transformational leadership coach, speaker, author and former head teacher about resilient leadership, confidence, integrity, compassion and helping people step into their potential. Gina became a head teacher at just 29. Early in her career, a serious skiing accident changed her life and forced her to rethink how she worked, led and defined herself. For much of her time as a head teacher, Gina led from a wheelchair, creating an approach based on trust, shared responsibility and helping staff take genuine ownership of their performance. Her school achieved two outstanding Ofsted inspections and appeared twice on the HMI list of the Top 100 Schools in England. But this is not simply a story about professional achievement or resilience. It is about learning to see potential in others, leading from values rather than ego, and choosing to act even when fear is present. Gina shares how early experiences of feeling different and overlooked shaped her ability to champion others. She explains why titles do not make someone a leader, why the best leaders recruit people who may be better than them in specialist areas, and how compassion and high standards can work together. We also discuss the difficult decision to leave a career she loved, reinvent her professional life, and turn fear into useful anticipation. Gina’s message is clear: lead your own life with integrity, compassion and courage—and you will be better equipped to help others do the same. In this conversation, we explore: • Feeling different, overlooked and outside established groups • Why one person’s belief can unlock someone else’s potential • The “light-bulb moment” when a person realises they can do more than they thought • What poor leadership can teach you about becoming a better leader • Why a job title does not automatically make someone a leader • Becoming a head teacher at 29 and leading more experienced colleagues • The skiing accident that changed Gina’s career and leadership style • Radical responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs, actions and words • Leading with integrity, compassion and high standards • How to give difficult feedback in a way that makes people want to improve • Leaving a career you love and rebuilding professional identity • The firewalk lesson: how fear and excitement can be the same physical response • Why great leaders hire for potential, curiosity, passion and teamwork • Delegation as a leadership and development tool Gina’s One Golden Nugget: Lead your own life first. Step into your power and become the leader of your life before you try to lead others.
