The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) was the military wing of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), a rebel movement that fought against the government of Sudan in the Second Sudanese Civil War. The SPLA was formed in 1983, at the outset of the civil war, and was composed largely of soldiers from the southern regions of Sudan who sought to end the government's marginalization and persecution of these areas. The SPLA fought a guerrilla campaign against the Sudanese government and its allied militias, and was known for its tactics of hit-and-run attacks and ambushes. The civil war resulted in the deaths of an estimated 2 million people and the displacement of 4 million more.
