Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on October 22 urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to expedite the release of ₹20,585.73 crore in drought relief under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) norms.
Karnataka recorded a 35% rainfall deficit during the 2026 southwest monsoon, receiving 551 mm against the normal 852 mm. The State government estimated agricultural losses at ₹62,481.88 crore and declared 226 of approximately 240 taluks drought-affected. Crop damage was reported across 57.93 lakh hectares, including 53.92 lakh hectares of agricultural crops and 4.01 lakh hectares of horticultural crops.
The State’s relief demand includes ₹6,128.70 crore in input subsidies for crop losses, ₹12,146.99 crore in financial assistance for 61.91 lakh small and marginal farmers, ₹1,727 crore for drinking water supply and ₹583.04 crore for animal husbandry and livestock protection. The proposed financial assistance is calculated at ₹327 per day for 60 days. Karnataka has also sought support to establish 476 cattle camps and 583 fodder banks.
Parameshwara additionally sought ₹427.20 crore under PM POSHAN to provide nutritious meals to schoolchildren during summer vacations in drought-affected taluks and ₹70.96 crore under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme for vulnerable beneficiaries.
He urged the Centre to use Karnataka’s updated FRUITS database instead of the Agricultural Census 2015–16 data, warning that outdated figures could result in a shortfall of approximately ₹1,669.50 crore in the relief assessment. The Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) visited Karnataka from October 3 to 6.
