The Hard Truth Every Young Soccer Player Needs to Hear

Some of the most talented young soccer players never reach their potential. Meanwhile, players who were once considered less talented go on to achieve far more. Why? Talent matters. But it isn't enough. The habits a player develops, the standards they hold themselves to, and the way they respond to adversity can have an enormous influence on how far they go in the game. Are you taking every repetition at training seriously? Can you accept criticism without making excuses? What happens to your work ethic when you become the best player on your team? Or when you're stuck on the bench? And are you taking responsibility for your own development? These questions get at some uncomfortable realities of player development. The discussion covers coachability, effort, focus, playing time, complacency, and why organized club training alone isn't enough for players with ambitions of reaching the highest levels. It also addresses something young players rarely consider: you have no idea how hard your competition is working outside your immediate environment. But if reaching the highest level is your ambition, the responsibility is yours to pursue it.
