Ten hours at The Lantern Beside the Quarry Steps: a continuously moving rain scene with a soft, original storm soundscape. Set a comfortable volume for resting, reading or drifting off.
Welcome to Velvet Miles. If this helps you unwind, like the video and subscribe for more quiet places.
THE SOUND
Soft rock and open-water rain heard from beneath a deep slate overhang beside a still quarry pool. Rounded sparse water impacts and quiet rock detail sit beneath a dark broad rain wash, with very low muffled thunder. Short low stone reflections add distance without a dramatic cave echo. No waterfall, voices, machinery or music.
THE SCENE
Quarry-pool reflections ripple gently with stronger near-water displacement and quieter distant ripples. Small tree crowns and shrubs sway independently beneath slow cloud drift. Wet-step highlights vary subtly; rock faces, steps, lantern and iron handrail remain stable. The cloud layer is restricted to the open central sky, with generous separation from the treeline and overhang. The welcome words fade away after seven seconds. The environment remains visible throughout all ten hours.
PRODUCTION NOTES
Python, NumPy and SciPy synthesize fresh stereo rainfall throughout the full ten hours. Separate layers shape the broad rain bed, surface impacts, outside detail and distant thunder. This scene uses a 244–4870 Hz main rain band with a 1650 Hz low-pass tilt; its surface detail has an average 35 independently placed impacts per second and a 62 ms envelope. Slowly varying weather levels avoid abrupt changes.
The 65 thunder events have individually shaped envelopes and low-frequency profiles, spaced roughly 6–12 minutes apart. One calibrated gain is applied across the soundtrack, with no repeated complete audio loop. No downloaded rain recordings, finished songs or vocal samples were used.
OpenCV provides the scene-specific masking and local animation, and FFmpeg assembles the final film. The two-minute visual cycle repeats smoothly. This is an imagined cinemagraph with software-created sound, rather than a field recording of an actual location. Source settings, event scores and separate preview stems are retained for the production.
