An instrument carries a current label, its display repeats, and its zero looks correct. Those facts are useful, but they do not by themselves establish that a particular part measurement is fit for release. You need a suitable method, a known relationship to references, controlled conditions and a decision rule. This lesson follows an original inspection-equipment case through calibration information, correction signs, uncertainty and continued control. It also examines what happens when later evidence challenges the instrument's status. The aim is to understand the measurement system well enough to know what its results support and when more evidence is needed.
Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Machinist learners.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Distinguish zero checks, calibration, verification and adjustment, and select measurement evidence suitable for the requirement.
• Care for inspection equipment, gauge blocks and surface plates while controlling identity, condition and environment.
• Interpret calibration information, calculate original corrections and use explicitly stated uncertainty models and decision rules.
• Maintain control through intermediate checks, interval review, as-found records and affected-product assessment.
CHAPTERS
0:00 A calibration label is the start of the investigation
0:45 Keep zero, calibration, verification and adjustment distinct
1:35 Worked decision: a correct zero can hide a range error
8:06 Worked sign convention: error and correction point opposite ways
8:58 Worked result: apply only a correction allowed by the method
9:48 Apply the assigned part-release rule
11:23 Worked combination uses explicit statistical assumptions
12:15 Check the type of uncertainty before combining values
13:07 Verification is a decision against named equipment requirements
17:08 Application: a dropped micrometer needs two separate resolutions
18:46 Practice: calculate the error and choose the next action
19:44 Answer: retain the arithmetic and control the uncertainty
20:36 Check whether the measurement chain is complete
21:23 Maintain a measurement system that can support its decisions
HOW TO STUDY
