Science Teacher (Mr. Guerra) demonstrates the famous iodine clock reaction using simple ingredients that anyone can find. When doing the iodine clock reaction, you get to experience two spectacular color changes. First, the iodine turns clear in the presence of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Second, the iodine solution reacts with the starch solution on a delay, seeming to change like magic. The experiment is so spectacular that students don't tend to believe the videos! Thank you to Chloe McKenna for helping do the experiment and Carina McKenna for recording. Directions 1. Make a vitamin C solution by dissolving 1g vitamin C and in 60mL of water. Be cautious with the vitamin C solution. It is acidic. 2. Combine 1 tsp of the vitamin C solution with 5mL of iodine and 100mL of water. Label this “solution A”. Be cautious with the iodine. Iodine is toxic. 3. Prepare “solution B” by combining 50mL of water, 50mL of hydrogen peroxide and 5mL of liquid starch solution. 4. Pour solution A into solution B, and pour the resulting solution back into the empty cup to mix them thoroughly. Keep pouring the liquid back and fourth between the cups.
