In the fall of 1993, the week after we buried my mother, I opened her sewing basket and found one folded sheet of paper in the bottom of her thimble tin. She quilted for sixty years and never wrote down a pattern, a measurement or a recipe for starch. That paper is the only thing about quilting she ever put in writing. I'm Hazel, I'm 84, and tonight I'm telling you twenty-five things my mother did at the cutting table and the quilt frame that you won't find in a pattern book, from the sandpaper on her cereal-box patterns to the quilt pattern that came printed inside a batting wrapper. Stay for number one, because what she wrote on that paper was me.
