Mount St. Helens Missing 411: his backpack was found on the crater rim, but the experienced climber was discovered about 1,200 feet below. Forty-four years earlier, another backpack held a photographer's last images of the 1980 eruption. Two backpacks. One volcano. Two very different tragedies.
What happened to the other people who went missing around Mount St. Helens and Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest?
A lost camper, Glen Austin Oldfield II, told hunters he was lost—then RAN away when they offered to lead him to the road. Gail Wietrick stepped into the trees near a gravel road to look for mushrooms and did not return. A teenager disappeared from a family trail; searchers found a shoe before he was eventually rescued alive.
Other files follow Matthew Matheny, Brian Yang, Garrett Canada and cases near Mount Adams, Ape Canyon and Lava Canyon.
From the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption and the final radio message of volcanologist David Johnston to later wilderness disappearances, Echo-7 investigates real case reports, search records and historical accounts in Missing 411 documentary style.
IMPORTANT: These cases have different outcomes. Some people remain missing, others were found alive or deceased. Roscoe "Rocky" Shorey's 2024 death was linked by authorities to a collapsing snow cornice; it is not presented as an unexplained disappearance. The 1924 Ape Canyon story is folklore, not a verified encounter.
