At 12:55 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 1965, a bomb warning reached Unity Funeral Home in Harlem. Outside, rock salt covered the sidewalk beneath the green canopy while police searched packages and watched from the roof. Inside, Malcolm X lay in an unusually long casket as mourners passed. This film follows the identification at the medical examiner’s office, the casket decision made with Unity manager Joseph E. Hall, the preparation details the surviving records do and do not reveal, the transition to a Muslim shroud, and the guarded journey from Harlem to Ferncliff Cemetery. Every step comes from funeral records, official files, and contemporary reporting. Where were you when you heard that Malcolm X had died? What state, and how old were you? Which part of his four-day viewing would you most want to see documented from Unity’s side? Tell us in the comments.
