A steam injector used a jet of boiler steam to force fresh water back into a boiler already under pressure—without a pumping piston, crankshaft, or impeller. Its fixed internal cones turned steam pressure into speed, condensed that steam into feedwater, then recovered enough pressure to open the boiler check valve. This small appliance helped make steam locomotives practical while running, drifting, or standing still. Follow Henri Giffard’s 1858 invention from the narrow water-level band above a locomotive firebox through its steam nozzle, mixing cone, overflow, and delivery passage. The story follows the fireman’s constant balance of water, fire, and pressure; the injector’s demanding relationship with cool water, dry steam, clean passages, and sound piping; and the wider network of tanks, water columns, and crews that kept steam railroads moving. It also traces the injector into mills, mines, ships, and stationary boilers before dieselization erased much of the world that required it. 00:00 The Narrow Water-Level Band 04:32 Pump Shutdown With the Engine 08:18 Steam as a Pump 15:29 Reading the Overflow 20:24 Temperature-Balanced Machine 26:04 The Fireman's Second Machine 30:13 Two Injectors in Industry 34:00 Machinery Lost With Steam Sources: National Museum of American History — “Giffard’s Patent Model of a Steam Boiler Injector” Henri Giffard — U.S. Patent 27,979, “Improved Feed-Water Apparatus for Steam-Boilers” George N.
