De aquel inmenso mar - Roque Ceruti (c. 1683 – 1760)

Cantada a voz sola a la Purísima Concepción Roque Ceruti was born in Milan around 1683 and emigrated to Peru, where he became one of the leading figures of Viceregal Baroque music, serving as maestro de capilla at the cathedrals of Trujillo and later Lima until his death in 1760. The cantata "De aquel inmenso mar" is a Marian piece written for solo voice, two violins, and basso continuo. Its manuscript survives in a collection that once belonged to the Cathedral of La Plata (now Sucre, Bolivia), and is today held at Bolivia's National Archive and Library (Archivo y Biblioteca Nacionales de Bolivia). This same collection was later used to compile the "Cancionero mariano de Charcas" - a modern critical edition (Eichmann Oehrli, 2009) bringing together 230 Marian poems found in these manuscripts.
