Ego enim accepi a Domino - Emerico Lobo de Mesquita (1746 – 1805)

José Joaquim Emerico Lobo de Mesquita (1746–1805) was born at Vila do Príncipe (now Serro), in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. He received his first music lessons (organ and music theory) from Father Manuel da Costa Dantas, who was organist and choirmaster at the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Serro. Soon after 1776, he went to Arraial do Tijuco (now Diamantina) to become organist and conductor at the Catedral de Santo Antônio there. In 1789, he entered the religious order of the Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. He founded a music school in the city and was appointed music teacher. In 1798, he worked in Vila Rica (now Ouro Preto) for the city mayor, and was also organist and choirmaster at the church of Nossa Senhora do Pilar. In 1805, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he became organist of the Ordem Terceira do Carmo until his death. "Ego enim accepi a Domino" was composed for Holy Thursday morning: "Lição para Matinas de Quinta-feira Santa" (Lesson for Matins of Holy Thursday). This piece could also have been composed by Jerônimo de Souza Lobo (1780–1810).
