Korean Lesson 2 teaches you how to ask what something is in Korean — this, that, or that thing over there — and how to answer in a full sentence. By the end you can answer the question in the title: 이거 뭐예요?, "what's this?" In this lesson you'll learn: Ask what something is in Korean three ways — igeo, geugeo, jeogeo — chosen by how close it is to you, to the listener, or to neither. Answer with ieyo or yeyo, picking the ending by whether the object's name ends in a consonant (batchim) or a vowel. Hear a batchim slide into the next syllable — umbrella-ieyo is said u-sa-ni-eyo — and see that a syllable ending in ng stays put instead. See ieyo shrink into yeyo once more — mwo (what) has no batchim, so mwo + ieyo becomes mwoyeyo. Watch Korean words typed key by key on a standard keyboard, from the first jamo to the finished block. Practice with three new photos and something of your own, both asking and answering out loud. Who it's for: For learners who've finished Lesson 1 — or can already greet someone and introduce themselves in Korean — and are ready to ask what something is (level A1). You should already be able to sound out Hangul letters; if you can't yet, start with the alphabet before this lesson. How this lesson works: Watch Korean lines get typed key by key, jamo by jamo, in the speech bubbles and on the board — and when the narration points at a sentence, its bubble zooms in to become a board page with the romanization and the meaning. See two people talk from either side of the screen in speech bubbles: each object appears as a Polaroid-style photo when it's asked about, with igeo, geugeo or jeogeo written under it from the speaker's point of view, and the camera travels out to the one that's far from both — so the right word clicks by sight before you learn the rule. Built-in pauses let you answer out loud first, plus two role-plays and several rounds of listening with no text on screen. Practice: Ask and answer about three new photos, then point to something near you, say your own two sentences out loud, and type them after the video ends.
