How do you ask where the bathroom is in Korean? In this Korean for beginners lesson (Lesson 4), you'll learn two ways to ask, and how to understand "over there" or "not here" when someone answers.
Made for beginners who can read Hangul, even slowly. Here's the short way to ask: 화장실이 어디예요?
In this lesson you'll learn:
Ask where the bathroom is in Korean in two ways: a short question and a longer one.
Understand the answers "it's over there" and "it's not here".
Say that something is there or isn't there with isseoyo and eopseoyo.
Name a place with the place marker e ("at"), such as "it's at the cafe" or "it's in the bathroom".
Follow a short umbrella dialogue and spot what changes from one sentence to the next: isseoyo to eopseoyo, there to here, and the thing you ask about.
Type isseoyo on a Korean keyboard and see why the way it sounds is not the way it's spelled.
Who it's for:
Adult beginners who can read Hangul, even slowly. The Korean is shown on screen as you hear it.
How this lesson works:
You watch the Korean get typed into a text box, key by key, so you can see how the letters build.
Sound pills show how a written word is read out loud, and a keyboard scene shows why isseoyo is spelled the way it is.
You pause and answer out loud, then say it slowly with Jiwoo; some questions have no text, so you listen first. In the umbrella scene you mostly listen while Jiwoo and a blank slot in the sentence show what changed, with one quick guess in your head. The cafe scenes are acted dialogues.
Practice:
Say where a bathroom is near you with a place plus e isseoyo (for example, a hotel or a mart), then type it in the comments.
