You order the white tuna. You pay extra for red snapper. You grab a can of tuna without a second thought. But here's what should stop you: when the ocean group Oceana DNA-tested seafood across America, roughly 1 in 3 samples wasn't the fish on the label — usually a cheaper species wearing an expensive name.
It gets stranger. That “white tuna” in your sushi often isn't tuna at all — it's frequently escolar, a completely different fish. And the humble can? The biggest US canned-tuna companies were caught in an illegal price-fixing scheme — a proven court case with guilty pleas, huge fines, and an executive sent to prison.
To be fair: most fishmongers and brands are honest, and a lot of mislabeling happens far up the supply chain, not at your store. This is about knowing what you're really buying, not fear. The tools to catch it — DNA testing, the FDA Seafood List — are real.
How to buy real seafood: buy whole fish when you can (a whole fish is hard to fake), ask your seller the exact species and origin, and be suspicious of suspiciously cheap “red snapper” or “white tuna.”
Subscribe and shop with more confidence — because the label doesn't always tell the full story.
