After a couple of hours exploring Chester - including a complete circuit of the city walls - it's time to get back on the buses and continue north.
This is the full Stagecoach Route 1 journey from Chester Railway Station to Liverpool Queen Square, filmed on Thursday 3 September 2026.
We leave Chester Railway Station at 11:04, initially crawling our way through the northern side of Chester before passing Upton and Chester Zoo. From there the route heads north through Backford, Cheshire Oaks and Ellesmere Port, before continuing through Great Sutton, Little Sutton, Hooton and Eastham and onto the Wirral.
Then comes Bromborough - an otherwise fairly ordinary-looking place with a rather extraordinary claim to history. The area is strongly argued to have been the location of the Battle of Brunanburh in 937, one of the great battles of early medieval Britain and an event closely associated with the consolidation of England. The exact battlefield remains disputed, but it's quite a thought while trundling through Bromborough on a local bus. If I was Paul Heaton and had his song writing capabilities I would definitely write a song about this.
Route 1 then continues through New Ferry, Rock Ferry and Tranmere into Birkenhead, before the final and rather brilliant part of the journey: descending into the Queensway Tunnel, travelling beneath the River Mersey and emerging slap bang in the middle of Liverpool.
We arrive at Liverpool Queen Square at 12:53, 1 hour 49 minutes after leaving Chester.
