We talk endlessly about business plans, funding, and market entry. But in Africa, the real currency is something nobody teaches you in business school.
Social capital.
Your reputation. Your network. Your ability to read a room. Your understanding of how power actually moves.
I've been building in DRC and Kenya for five years. And I've watched brilliant founders fail — not because their numbers were wrong, but because they didn't understand the unwritten rules.
In this episode, I break down the four pillars of social capital in Africa:
Presentation & Perception
L'habit fait le moine — the clothes make the man. In Francophone Africa especially, how you show up signals whether you belong. The diaspora mistake? Dressing down like we're back in Silicon Valley. In Africa, that reads as "I don't take myself seriously."
Social Debt – The Favor Economy
In the West, we think transactionally. "I do this, you do that." In Africa, that's a poor person's game. The wealthy don't keep score — they just keep giving. Because favors compound in ways money never can.
Strategic Silence
You're trained in the West to speak up, show your intelligence, demonstrate value. In Africa, that often makes you a threat. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is stay quiet and observe.
Bonus: The gender dynamic. As a woman in African business — especially in Francophone Africa — the rules are different. I share what I've learned about building male allies, strategic visibility, and playing a game that wasn't designed for you.
If you're building in Africa — or thinking about it — this one is essential.
Because the business will fail without the relationships. The relationships will outlast the business.
