I had heard stories about River Ethiope for years. As a graduate of Delta State University, Abraka, the river was familiar to me. I had heard the warnings, the stories of people who ventured too close and the many questions surrounding this remarkable river. But I had never seen where the story begins. So I travelled to Umuaja, in Ukwani Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, to search for the source of River Ethiope — the place associated with the Onuku Tree. What I found was much more than a tree and a source of water. In this documentary, I take you through the journey to Umuaja and into the environment surrounding the Onuku Tree, where I encountered a place regarded by the community as sacred ground and connected to worship and traditional beliefs. This is not an attempt to prove or disprove anyone’s beliefs. It is a journey to listen, observe, ask questions and document a story that deserves to be remembered. From the roads of Ukwani to the sacred ground surrounding the Onuku Tree, come with me as I travel back to the source of River Ethiope.
