We Found a Village Where Everyone Was Replaced

Hidden deep in the mountains of Japan sits a village that feels like it has been frozen in time. Nagoro was once home to families, workers and children. But as people moved away and others passed on, the village slowly became quieter and emptier. One woman, Ayano Tsukimi, decided she didn’t want the memories of the people who once lived there to disappear with it. So she began recreating them. Today, life-sized scarecrows sit outside homes, wait beside the road and fill the old school classrooms, almost as if the village is still alive. Walking through it is one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had. Some of these figures look so convincing from a distance that for a second, you genuinely forget they aren’t real.
