You are standing barefoot on a beach, and the wave in front of you does not come back. Every ocean on Earth has just vanished: 1.3 billion cubic kilometers of water, gone for exactly one year.
Most people think of the sea as scenery. It is the planet's heater, its air conditioner, its rain machine and its largest home for life. We follow the year hour by hour and month by month: the ships that fall, the new map of the world, the salt storms, the day the rain stops, the planet that burns by day and freezes by night, and the first expeditions down to a sea floor no human has ever walked on. Then the water returns, and we find out what cannot come back with it.
How far do you live from the sea? Tell us in the comments, and whether you would have walked out onto the sea floor.
