Jackie Kennedy's Mother Was Far More RUTHLESS Than Newport Ever Knew The official story is simple. Janet Lee Auchincloss was a Newport lady, a champion horsewoman, a woman of good Southern stock who married well twice and raised a First Lady. Almost every part of that sentence was built by hand. Her father was the son of poor immigrants from County Cork. According to one historian, her own Irish mother was kept upstairs when the right kind of guests came to the house. She took her daughters to Reno for a divorce in 1940, married into Standard Oil money two years later, and ran Hammersmith Farm like a regiment. On the morning of Jacqueline's wedding in 1953, the bride's father did not walk her down the aisle, and the accounts of why still split. Sixty years of careful work ended up in a single line of her obituary. It all comes back to one word: Stratford.
