We feature Kiichi Uemura, a skilled Japanese hairdresser (Keppatsushi) who crafts wigs for Maiko. Inspired by a conversation with a friend in France about Japanese traditional hair,
Kiichi decided to study Japan's cultural heritage and mastered the art of hair styling. He brings to life a 400 year-old hairstyle by creating "Mame-katsura"—exquisite 1/3-scale miniature wigs that originated in the Edo period.
Through his delicate craftsmanship, Kiichi works to preserve and pass on the beauty and techniques of traditional Japanese hairstyles, which is fading away as time passes by.
