RETREAT FOR PRIEST – LESSON 4 “The Holy Hour and Fighting Evil” Blessed Fulton J. Sheen What concrete spiritual practice can transform the life of a priest? In Lesson 4 of Retreat for Priest, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen proposes one lifelong resolution: A DAILY HOLY HOUR IN THE PRESENCE OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. Sheen begins by asking why priests can make retreat after retreat yet carry away so few permanent resolutions. He then identifies what he calls a “de-Eucharistization” — a decline in personal love, sensitivity, and responsiveness toward Christ in the Eucharist. The answer, Sheen argues, is not simply more activity. It is companionship with Christ. In Gethsemane, Jesus returned to His chosen disciples and asked: “Can you not watch one hour with Me?” For Sheen, the Holy Hour is rooted in that invitation. It is: • companionship with Christ • Eucharistic adoration • spiritual combat • intercession • reparation • self-knowledge • transformation into Christ’s likeness Sheen also reminds priests that their mission is deeper than simply “ministry”: “We’re just not ministering — we’re saving — we’re reconciling!” Through the example of Moses interceding for Israel, Sheen presents priestly prayer as standing before God for others. The Holy Hour also teaches the priest to know himself. “How do we know what we are? By looking at Christ.” Finally, Sheen returns to the Real Presence of Christ — Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity — and describes the transformation that occurs through remaining in His presence: “We reflect… as in a mirror, the splendor of the Lord.” The result is a priest gradually transformed into Christ’s likeness — “from splendor to splendor.” ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS 0:00 Opening Prayer 1:16 What Should We Carry Away From a Retreat? 2:50 A Concrete Lifelong Resolution 4:53 “De-Eucharistization” – Decline in Love of the Eucharist 7:45 Liturgy and Personal Piety 11:00 The Eucharist at the Center of Priesthood 11:55 Sheen Proposes the Daily Holy Hour 12:53 Gethsemane – “Watch One Hour With Me” 13:56 Why One Hour? 14:43 Christ’s “Hour” and the Power of Evil 16:01 The Holy Hour as Spiritual Combat 17:28 Intercession and Reparation 18:30 “We’re Saving — We’re Reconciling” 18:37 Moses and the Golden Calf 20:07 Why We Make the Holy Hour 20:22 Self-Knowledge Through Christ 21:43 Sacrifice and Sacrament 24:59 The Real Presence of Christ 25:41 From Splendor to Splendor 26:34 The Retreat Is a Failure Without the Holy Hour 26:59 “Come and See” 27:26 God Love You ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ LESSON 4 PARTICIPANT PACKET Download the complete Lesson 4 Formation Transcript & Participant Packet: [ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Zd1s... ] The participant packet includes: • Complete formatted transcript • Central Formation Takeaway • Lesson overview • Learning objectives • Reflection questions • Scripture references • Catechism references • Formation Insertion Map • Biblical Reference Guide • Catechism Reference Guide • Knowledge Check • Research links • Catholic prayers ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ABOUT RETREAT FOR PRIEST RETREAT FOR PRIEST presents Archbishop Fulton J.
