Sheen Love, Marriage & Children – Lesson 9 Original Title: “For Better or Worse” What happens when the romance of marriage encounters the realities of everyday life? In this remarkable lesson, Blessed Fulton J. Sheen explores the tensions that naturally exist within married love—and explains why those tensions do not necessarily mean that love has failed. Drawing on years of correspondence concerning “problems of the home and problems of the heart,” Sheen identifies three fundamental tensions found in marriage: • UNITY AND SEPARATENESS Love naturally seeks union with another person, yet husband and wife remain distinct persons. Sheen explains that the more marriage rises beyond the merely material toward the spiritual, the greater the possibility for genuine unity. • THE PERSONAL AND THE SOCIAL Love is intensely personal and directed toward one irreplaceable person. Yet the love between husband and wife also reaches beyond them, opening naturally toward family and society. • LONGING AND SATISFACTION The human heart longs for complete love and fulfillment, yet no earthly relationship can completely satisfy the deepest desires of the soul. For Sheen, this longing ultimately points beyond earthly love toward God. Sheen then turns to the particular difficulties that can wound marriage, including addiction, unfaithfulness, selfishness, disappointment and spiritual sickness. Rather than reducing marriage to romance or emotional satisfaction, he challenges husbands and wives to discover something deeper: perseverance, faith, fidelity, sacrifice and service. As marriage matures, Sheen explains, the spouse who was first received as a gift may also become an opportunity for service—and ultimately be recognized as a gift of God.
