New York City, 1624 to now. From thirty Dutch families at the tip of an island to five boroughs and eight and a half million people: 400 years rebuilt in 3D, year by year, with almost a million buildings rising in the year they were really built.
New Amsterdam and the wall of Wall Street, the Battle of Brooklyn, Washington's oath, the grid of 1811, the Erie Canal, the Great Fire of 1835 hour by hour, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, Greater New York in 1898, the Woolworth, Chrysler and Empire State buildings, the World's Fair in Queens, Idlewild, the Verrazzano Bridge and Staten Island, the Twin Towers, September 11, One World Trade Center and Billionaires' Row.
Which city should we rebuild next? Tell us in the comments.
This is an illustrative 3D reconstruction from NYC Open Data building footprints, OpenStreetMap and published histories, not archival footage. Building data: NYC Open Data (City of New York).
