YESU KIMBILIO - The STAR Chorale

Yesu Kimbilio is a TTBB choral composition with piano accompaniment by Joshua Apollo, a student from the Kenyatta University Faculty of Music. Rooted in African rhythmic and melodic traditions, the piece highlights the percussive qualities of both the voices and the piano, creating a rich and engaging musical texture. The work is inspired by the Christian theme of refuge in Christ, presenting Yesu Kimbilio(Jesus, My Refuge) as a meditation on trust, peace, and security amid life’s uncertainties. Its text is drawn from John 3:16 in Swahili, allowing the familiar scripture to resonate through the natural rhythm and lyrical beauty of the language. Musically, the piano plays a central role, providing both rhythmic drive and harmonic support. The piece unfolds from a gentle, worshipful opening, builds in intensity as it moves toward the promise of eternal life (uzima wa milele), and resolves into a श ांत, reflective close that reinforces the theme of Christ as a lasting refuge.
