Nakei Nairobi is a Congolese hit song originally composed by Tabu Ley Rochereau and famously performed by Mbilia Bel. Meaning “I am going to Nairobi,” the song became a major regional success in the 1980s, spreading widely across Africa. The narrative follows Mbilia Bel, who learns that her childhood friend Duni is being mistreated in Kenya. In response, she resolves to travel from Kinshasa to Nairobi to rescue her friend and bring her back home. Key lyrical expressions include: “Nayoki Nzambe motindo ya mpasi, ba nyokoli yo” – I have heard that you are being mistreated. “Nakei Nairobi, po na salisa Duni” – I am going to Nairobi to help my friend Duni. “Nakei Nairobi; na ko zonga na Duni” – I am going to Nairobi; I will return with Duni.
