Skye Bridge The gateway to the Isle of Skye. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The Skye Bridge connects Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland with Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye, crossing Loch Alsh. Before the bridge opened in 1995, the journey was made by ferry, which could become particularly busy during the summer months. The bridge was built to provide a faster and more reliable connection, and officially opened on 16 October 1995. The bridge itself also has an interesting history. It was privately financed and operated as a toll bridge, and the charges quickly became hugely controversial. Local residents strongly opposed the tolls, leading to years of protests and a campaign of non-payment. In 2004, the Scottish Government bought the bridge and the tolls were finally abolished. We crossed the bridge, but decided not to explore much further into Skye. We had deliberately chosen the quieter parts of Scotland for this trip, and after so many kilometres in the car, it was also time to slow things down a little for our six-year-old daughter. So Skye will have to wait for another adventure.
