Canada IMG pathway 2026 explained: MCCQE Part 1, NAC OSCE, CaRMS residency, the January 2026 LMCC change and the Practice-Ready Assessment (PRA) route.
Does Canada really need doctors, and why does the standard route take 4-8 years? This video shows how the Canadian pathway works for international medical graduates, what changed this year, and whether Canada is worth it for you.
I'm Dr. Tazeem Shahbaz, Dean of Community Medicine and Public Health. This channel helps IMGs and health professionals build international careers with smart strategy, strong research and global opportunities.

Standard route (6 stages): MCC credential verification and English test (3-6 months) → MCCQE Part 1 (~230 MCQs, IMG pass rates around 65-70%) → NAC OSCE (10-12 stations) → CaRMS match → residency (2-5 years) → MCCQE Part 2 and provincial licensing. Typically 4-8 years in total.
2026 change: from January 26, 2026, the 12-month postgraduate training requirement for the LMCC was removed, and there is no separate LMCC application after that date.
PRA route: for experienced IMGs. Provinces include Alberta, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. Experience requirements vary by province.

Provincial requirements change and vary. Always confirm current rules with the Medical Council of Canada and your province's medical regulatory authority before applying or paying any fees. Timelines are typical ranges, not guarantees. My view on whether Canada is worth it is opinion, not a rule. This video is educational and is not legal or immigration advice.
