After five years as a vascular surgeon, I no longer believe that surgery fixes vascular disease. In this video I walk through five things I believed when I finished training and have since let go of. The first one is in the title. A stent, angioplasty, or bypass treats one narrowed stretch of artery. Atherosclerosis, the disease behind peripheral artery disease, heart attack, and stroke, keeps working on every other artery in the body. I also get into why the most important numbers in your health often never make it into your chart, why I no longer think the surgeon is the most important healer in the room, and two more beliefs that shifted once I'd followed enough patients past the operating room. If you have peripheral artery disease or carotid disease, you've had a stent or bypass, or you're a med student or clinician trying to figure out where surgery fits in vascular care, this one is for you. ▶️ WATCH NEXT Can You Unclog Arteries?
