A physio at Queen's Club kept seeing the same injury - and it wasn't the players' technique. It was the rackets they'd bought. Elbow and wrist pain, over and over, in people with fifteen or twenty years of racket sports behind them. Wesley Teixeira has been a physiotherapist for 15 years and runs Physio Vita inside Queen's Club in London. When padel courts went in there, the injuries started arriving. He went looking for a lighter padel racket that still played properly, couldn't find one, and spent 18 months with the engineering department at the University of Wales working out how to build it - where he found that what decides how a racket plays isn't the carbon, it's the foam. What follows is factory after factory turning him down, a long shot at a German trade show, a patent-pending frame design, and the academy he wants to build for British juniors. Wes also makes the case for what UK padel needs to grow - and why planning permission might be helping more than people think.
