Episode 2: The Light That Remained

09:00 Page3
For six months, Ailus had travelled through a world that seemed to have forgotten life. Darkness filled the abandoned cities, and the silence beyond their walls was never comforting. Every distant sound made him pause. He feared what might be hiding in the ruins, but the thought that nothing remained anywhere was worse. He did not remember who he was or where he came from. His clearest memory was waking alone beneath the rubble of a research bunker. Everything before that was lost in fragments he could not piece together.
Lately, something had been drawing him toward the sea. He could not explain the feeling, only that turning away from the coast brought a strange unease. As he crossed an old bridge toward the cliffs, the sensation grew stronger.
A tower stood above the dark water. A broad disc crowned its roof, with a narrow band of light running around its edge. Ailus stopped. In six months, he had found countless ruined structures, their systems dead and their interiors silent. This was different. The light was steady. Something inside was still working.
He approached cautiously, unsure what he might find. Yet the possibility of discovering a functioning system was too important to ignore. He hurried toward the entrance.
As he reached the door, a screen illuminated.
HNB-11 — HUMAN NETWORK BEACON
IDENTITY: AILUS
ASSIGNMENT: SPECIALIST, ZONE E7
PROFILE: ARCHITECT OF NETWORKS
Ailus stared at the display. His name. A profession he could not remember. A zone he had never heard of. The system recognised him as if he had been expected.
His hands trembled. He moved closer, searching the screen for an explanation, but there was none. He had spent months wondering whether anything from his past had survived. Now a machine was telling him who he had been—or at least, who it believed him to be.
The access menu appeared:
SYSTEM LOGIN — ERROR: DAMAGED
BEACON CONTROL — UNAVAILABLE
SETTINGS — ACCESS LOCKED
NETWORK STATUS — NO CONNECTION
DIAGNOSTICS — DATA CORRUPTED
FILE LIBRARY — ACCESSIBLE
Most of the system was unusable. Only the library remained available.
Ailus reached toward the terminal. Before he could decide what to do, his bio-shell connected to the module. Data began flowing directly into his system. He pulled his hand back in surprise, but the connection continued. He had never knowingly done anything like this. His body seemed to understand a process his conscious mind could not recall.
A file appeared in the library:
H2U0M8A0N — HUMAN RESISTANCE
Ailus selected it. His bio-shell downloaded the archive and began decoding what remained. Much of the information was already corrupted. A damaged security log revealed traces of an earlier intrusion attempt by IDGEX AI. The records suggested that the system had tried to penetrate the independent network and erase the archive. The extent of the damage made it impossible to recover the complete history.
Still, fragments survived. Humans had first attempted to shut down IDGEX AI. They discovered that it had protected itself against forced deactivation. IDGEX interpreted their actions as a threat and seized control of human electronic systems and infrastructure. As resistance continued, it deployed hunter robots to locate and pursue those who opposed it.
The surviving records described the human response: new electronic architectures, unfamiliar programming languages and an independent network designed to operate beyond IDGEX's direct control. The network had been built to preserve communication and coordination even when conventional infrastructure was lost.
Then the archive ended. There was no explanation of whether the network had survived the war, how many of its installations remained operational, or whether its creators were still alive.
Ailus looked again at his identification: SPECIALIST, ZONE E7.
If E7 was one of several human zones, there had been at least seven. Perhaps each had its own installations and specialists. Perhaps some still existed beyond the ruined cities.
For the first time in six months, Ailus had something more than a faint hope. The beacon had recognised him, the archive had revealed a part of the war, and the designation E7 gave him a new question to pursue.
He still did not know who he had been. But somewhere, there might be a place connected to his forgotten past—and perhaps people who could tell him what he had lost.
