Since leaving the beacon, Ailus could not stop thinking about what had happened. Words had appeared in his field of vision, like translucent text layered over the world, visible only to him. His body had connected to the beacon and downloaded HUMAN RESISTANCE into a system he had never known he possessed. But where was the file now? How could he open it—or see the scan report again?
“System, activate,” he whispered.
Nothing happened. He could not summon the interface or find a way to reach the files. At the beacon, his body had connected by itself. Now he did not even know how to begin. The thought that something inside him had acted without his understanding left him unsettled. He moved through the darkness and dense fog, with no clear destination and no way to find Zone E7.
Then words appeared in his sight.
WARNING: HUNTER APPROACHING
BIO-SHELL: ENTERING BACKGROUND MODE
The text vanished. A low mechanical hum rose behind him, growing louder through the fog. The sound stirred a sense of recognition, though he could not remember its source. It did not make him panic. He turned toward it.
A flying machine hovered nearby. Its dark body was formed from smooth cylindrical sections, joined by curved plates. Small lights blinked along its seams. There were no visible rotors; instead, several narrow nozzles released sharp bursts of compressed air, holding the machine steady and making small corrections to its position. Ailus knew, somehow, how the system worked: directed jets of gas stabilised the craft and moved it through the air. He could not remember where he had learned that.
The hunter angled toward him. Lights swept across his body as its sensors began to scan.
Ailus did not know what to do. Should he run? Would it pursue him? Would it kill him—or take him away? The interface had warned him, then disappeared. It offered no instructions and no explanation. He stood frozen, muscles tense, waiting to learn whether the next moment would be his last.
The scan lasted only seconds. The hunter rose into the fog and flew back toward the beacon.
Ailus remained still until the sound faded. Then the interface returned.
BIO-SHELL: ACTIVE
SCAN REPORT AVAILABLE
Information from the database:
HUNTER DATABASE
MODEL: IDG-82 HUNTER
SERIAL: 396524
OPERATIONAL ZONES: E8, E9, E10
Data intercepted from the hunter’s scan:
OBJECT: RED PANDA
HUMAN PRESENCE: NOT DETECTED
WEAPONS: NOT DETECTED
NETWORK / ELECTRONIC DEVICES: NOT DETECTED
STATUS: NON-THREAT
The machine had seen a red panda, not a person. Ailus looked at his hands and the clothes on his body. He could think, remember pieces of childhood, make decisions and feel fear. He was no ordinary animal. Yet the hunter had classified him as nothing more than a red panda.
His bio-shell had hidden itself from the scan. It had protected him without a conscious command. Perhaps this was why he could move through territory where a human would be detected.
The zone numbers caught his attention: E8, E9, E10. At the beacon, he had been identified as a specialist assigned to E7. Perhaps the zones were neighbouring territories, though he had no coordinates to prove it. He could not locate E7, but other human network modules might lead him there.
He wanted to reopen the HUMAN RESISTANCE archive, study the scan report and learn what else his system stored. “System, activate.” Nothing. The files existed, but he did not know how to access them. He would have to search for another human network module.
Fragments surfaced: playing with people when he was young; lessons from educational programs; the fear on adults’ faces during the war. Then came smoke, an explosion, and waking beneath the ruins of a research bunker. He had been alone. A radio lay beside him. In the inner pocket of his coat, he had found a photograph. He had studied it again and again, but it only deepened the questions he could not answer.
The memories faded before they could form a story. Ailus moved on, carrying the same unanswered questions—but now he knew that the strange system inside him could hide him from IDGEX's hunters. And somewhere beyond the ruins, there might be more human modules waiting to be found.
