A Tender Distance There is a distance unique to every relationship. We reach out to others, yet sometimes hesitate, afraid of crossing the boundaries between us. A distance that keeps us from hurting one another by being too close, without letting us lose touch by drifting too far apart. Perhaps relationships are not so much about finding the right distance as they are about learning how to be together while remaining different in who we are. Between one person and another, between ourselves and our work, between ourselves and the world. If one step is not enough and two steps take us too far, perhaps it is all right to stand somewhere in between today. Perhaps life is a journey of finding that tender line along which we can stay connected without losing ourselves. Embracing even our moments of hesitation with kindness, I reach out to someone once more today, moving at my own pace. To a place where neither heart is hurt, following that tender line.
