On July 21, 1948, a B-29 Superfortress flying a secret-sounding science mission hit the glassy surface of Lake Mead at about 230 miles an hour. All five men on board survived. The bomber sank in minutes, and it took 53 years to find it again. This month, the National Park Service confirmed the plane no longer sits at a technical diving depth. Lake Mead has dropped more than 140 feet since the crash, and ordinary recreational divers can now reach it. We cover how the plane got there, how sonar finally found it in 2001, why the lake kept it intact for half a century, and the two things destroying it right now. One is the falling water. The other is more than two tons of quagga mussels. ▶ What happens to Hoover Dam's turbines below 1,035 feet:    • It's Confirmed: Hoover Dam Is About to Los...   ▶ Hoover Dam isn't the problem.
